Hello. I’m Lucas.
A freelance product designer from Scotland.
I have 15 years experience specialising in UI / UX Design & Web Development - creating responsive websites, apps and experiences for big brands, start-ups, design agencies and small businesses.
What I do
I design digital products from the ground up, handling everything from initial user research through to final prototypes and design systems.
UI Design
Good design is more than aesthetics - it’s about clarity and ease of use. I craft clean, professional user interfaces (UI) that make websites intuitive and enjoyable to navigate. Every element and design decision reflects your brand identity and meets your audience’s needs, ensuring your site is both visually striking and highly functional.
UX Design
User experience (UX) design focuses on how people interact with your website. I design experiences that are intuitive, efficient, and satisfying, reducing friction at every step. By understanding your users and their goals, I help create digital journeys that not only look good but also drive results for your business.
Wireframing
Before committing to full development, wireframing allows you to see how a website or feature will work in practice. I create interactive wireframes that bring your ideas to life, allowing for feedback, testing, and refinement before a single line of code is written. This saves time, reduces risk, and ensures the final build meets expectations.
Design Systems
Consistency builds trust. I develop styleguides and branding systems that keep your website and marketing materials cohesive and professional. From logos and typography to colours and imagery, I help you define a clear visual language that reflects your business identity and connects with your audience.
Accessibility Testing
A well designed website should be usable by everyone, regardless of their abilities. I run thorough accessibility tests to check against standards like WCAG, spotting any issues that might block users. Making sure your site is accessible not only improves usability for all visitors but shows inclusivity as a core value of your business.
Web Development
I build custom websites using Drupal and WordPress. Whether you're building or refreshing a website, I focus on performance, scalability and accessibility. From simple brochure sites to complex web applications, I deliver solutions that work.

Some of the projects I'm proud of.
I designed a decentralised e-commerce experience powered by cryptocurrency payments for Mass Market.

About
Get to know me
Currently living in the Scottish Borders, I'm originally from the Isle of Skye. I've been building websites and solving digital problems for businesses for over 15 years.
I found myself getting pulled into UI/UX design around 2015 after working as a frontend developer for five years. I’ve always found there is something so satisfying about taking a client's complex requirements and figuring out how to make them simple and intuitive. It's like solving a puzzle, and after all this time I genuinely love what I do.
These days I work as both a designer and developer depending on what my clients’ requirements are. I can design your interface from scratch and then build it myself, or I can take your existing designs and bring them to life with clean, reliable code. Having both skills means I see the bigger picture, not just whether something works, but whether it works well for your business and users.
My experience has taught me what actually works and I’ve learnt to push back on ideas that sound good on paper but won’t deliver in real life. One of the most enjoyable elements of my job is coming up with alternative ideas that will actually solve problems and not just look pretty.
What working with me looks like:
- I'll keep you in the loop every step of the way. No radio silence for weeks, no surprise delays, and no confusing technical jargon (unless that's your thing). You'll always know exactly where your project stands.
- When I give you a deadline, I meet it. Fifteen years of freelancing has taught me that reliability isn't just nice to have, it's everything. Your project launches when we say it will.
- I play well with others. Whether you've got an in-house team, you're working with an agency, or it's just you and me figuring things out, I adapt to how you work. No ego, no drama, just getting the job done.
I've worked across the board, public sector projects with numerous stakeholders, busy startups moving at breakneck speed, established businesses with complex requirements, and everything in between. Different challenges, same approach: understand what you actually need, build it properly, and make sure it works.
When I'm not at my desk:
During my time off I like to keep fit and spend as much time in the great outdoors as possible. I enjoy hiking, trail running and lifting weights during the winter months when its too cold to be out in the hills! I’m also a massive petrol head, Formula 1 fan, enjoy a good film or game and have a secret passion…. Lego!
If you've got a project you'd like to chat about, I’d love to hear what you're working on.
Process
How I approach a design project.
Defining the project
Before designing anything, I work closely with product and engineering to understand requirements. I align with stakeholders, conduct user research, and analyse data to clarify goals, pain points, constraints and edge cases. From there I define the structure of the experience through user flows, journey maps, and information architecture. These early artefacts establish a shared understanding across teams, highlight potential friction points and lay the groundwork for effective, scalable design and development.
Design and validation
I design clean functional interfaces using scalable components and design systems, focusing on clarity, accessibility, and long-term maintainability. Whether building within an existing language or creating a new one, every detail is considered with purpose. I prototype interactions at a high fidelity to validate ideas early, test usability, and gather feedback. Design decisions are shaped by both qualitative insight and performance data, keeping the process iterative, informed, and user-centred.
Continuous review
A good designer never just hands over the finished files and walks away. I like to work closely with engineers to ensure smooth implementation, providing clear, dev-ready specifications, reviewing builds, and refining designs as needed throughout the development process and active involvement during QA and launch to maintain design integrity.
Development
Bridging the gap between design and development.
My technical skillset gives me a unique advantage as a designer, I’m able to bridge the gap between design and development teams, translating visual intent into practical implementation. I understand what’s feasible from a development perspective and can communicate clearly with engineering teams to deliver solutions that are both visually refined and technically achievable.
